Bain & Co. recently pushed this out. Now this does a great job of explaining the transactional ecosystem for retailers (including restaurants and hotels which aren’t really retail businesses but operators run them like they are) but staying inside this ecosystem forces you to compete on commodity terms such as price and frequency. I've been in the restaurant business for 45 years. My work has been to design better restaurants by developing better operators. Smarter thinking wins. Period. The operator who puts it to work runs a better business. I have written several books on it, The Operator's Playbook among them.
